Self-esteem affects how we see ourselves, relate to others and move through everyday life. When your self-worth feels low, it can impact your confidence, relationships, decisions and emotional wellbeing.
Self-esteem counselling offers a supportive and confidential space to explore how you feel about yourself, at your own pace and without fear of judgement.
As an Accredited NCPS Counsellor, I offer person-centred counselling for adults experiencing low self-esteem in Warwickshire, including Snitterfield, Leamington Spa and online.
Signs of low self-esteem
It is never too late to be what you might have been – George Eliot
Many people struggle silently with low self-esteem for years without fully recognising how deeply it affects their lives.
You may:
- constantly doubt yourself
- feel “not good enough”
- compare yourself negatively to others
- fear rejection or criticism
- struggle with boundaries
- find yourself people-pleasing
- feel anxious in relationships
- overthink social situations
- find it difficult to accept compliments
- feel disconnected from your own needs
Sometimes low self-worth can appear outwardly hidden. You may seem capable, caring or successful to others whilst privately feeling insecure, self-critical or emotionally exhausted.
Counselling can help you understand where these feelings come from and begin to develop a kinder and more realistic relationship with yourself.
Where does our self-worth come from?
Our sense of self-worth often develops through our early relationships and life experiences.
Children who feel emotionally safe, valued and understood are more likely to grow into adults with a secure sense of self. However, difficult experiences can affect how we see ourselves later in life.
For example:
- criticism
- bullying
- abuse
- neglect
- trauma
- bereavement
- unstable relationships
- feeling different or misunderstood
- unrealistic expectations from others
can all contribute towards feelings of shame, insecurity or self-doubt.
Sometimes self-esteem difficulties continue quietly for many years. At other times, a significant life event such as relationship breakdown, illness, burnout, loss or workplace stress can suddenly affect confidence and emotional wellbeing.
Low self-worth is also commonly linked with anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties.
How can counselling help build self-esteem?
My counselling approach provides warmth, empathy and acceptance, allowing you to safely explore your feelings and experiences.
Within the therapeutic relationship, we can begin to gently understand:
- how you learned to see yourself
- where self-critical beliefs may have developed
- how past experiences still affect you now
- patterns within relationships
- the emotional impact of masking or people-pleasing
- difficulties expressing needs or boundaries
Therapy is not about “fixing” you.
Instead, counselling can help you reconnect with yourself more compassionately and realistically, developing greater self-awareness, confidence and emotional resilience over time.
As your understanding grows, many people notice they:
- become less self-critical
- feel more emotionally balanced
- trust themselves more
- feel calmer in relationships
- communicate needs more openly
- develop healthier boundaries
- experience improved confidence and self-respect
Improving self-esteem often takes time, particularly if these feelings have been present for many years. However, therapy can provide a supportive space where lasting change becomes possible.
