Ring the bells that still can ring. Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in — Leonard Cohen
How can counselling help depression?
In England, common mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are reported by 1 in 6 people in any given week. Counselling for depression is about helping you understand yourself and the root causes of your depressive symptoms. Sometimes, if you feel low for a prolonged period of time, it may feel hard to appreciate activities you used to enjoy. In addition, it can be difficult to motivate yourself and this can affect your day-to-day living.
Deepening depression? Seek help
If you have continued low mood, you may experience suicidal thoughts which can be frightening. Despair and suicidal ideas can be warning signs that your condition is worsening.
Other symptoms that your depression may be deepening can be self-harm or excessive use of alcohol or substances. These coping mechanisms may soothe the pain of extremely difficult feelings but can lead to other health problems.
In counselling, we can work together to help you find healthy ways to cope whilst exploring the root cause of your difficult lows in a safe and contained environment.
I am experienced in counselling clients who are feeling low and depressed. I have helped many people suffering from different levels of this distressing experience. Following our therapeutic work together many clients have gone on to live hopeful and more fulfilling lives.
An empathic and accepting counselling approach
My counselling approach for sufferers involves exploring your feelings and building an empathic relationship where you can feel accepted. This can help to open up issues which may be causing your depression, such as low self-esteem, bereavement, trauma or relationship problems.
At times, this work can feel daunting. As an experienced counsellor for depression, I will listen and emotionally hold you which allows you room to develop self-understanding. As a result, this can help to ease your depressive symptoms as you build awareness.
My counselling experience encompasses many clients who have suffered deep depression. Together we have managed to alleviate their symptoms and find a way forward.
We can work creatively
Sometimes, I work creatively which may help you to explore emotions in a different way. If agreed with you in advance, we can use art, poetry, writing or stones as a form of communication. Additionally, working in this way can be especially good for people who find it hard to put their feelings into words.
