Overwhelming anxiety can be debilitating. Fear keeps us trapped but life can be different. Anxiety counselling allows you a confidential space to explore what is causing your anxious feelings. As an experienced counsellor, I will offer understanding and help you to start the road to recovery.
What is anxiety & how does counselling help?
Too many of us are not living our dreams because we are living our fears – Anon
Human beings have an inbuilt ‘fight or flight’ response. This was originally designed for survival to protect us from threats in the wild. When you feel fearful or nervous, you may notice ‘butterflies in the stomach’. This is your body sensing potential dangers.
Anxious symptoms are often caused by this survival response being activated, even in non-threatening situations. This can feel overwhelming and sometimes leads to severe panic.
Counselling for anxiety helps you to explore these feelings safely. You can start to understand yourself in this confidential space. I will be there with you.
If stress mounts up, anxious thoughts can become a serious problem. Social situations often become unbearable for a person suffering from such severe worry.
You may have received a diagnosis of an anxiety or panic disorder. This can be a frightening prospect in itself. It is so difficult to live with such unease. You deserve support. A chance to talk to a person who understands.
Therapy helps you to cope
My therapeutic approach allows you the space to discuss your symptoms. You can talk about any issues that are troubling you, without fear of judgement. Furthermore, I use empathy to understand how things are for you. As a result, this builds trust whilst helping you to learn to cope with your anxious feelings.
In sessions, we can identify your triggers. Where and when you may become anxious? Establishing patterns can help you to do things differently. Not by avoiding situations, but learning how to manage them more effectively.
Coping techniques
Grounding techniques and mindfulness help with anxious thoughts, fear and panic. I may invite you to consider trying these in our sessions together. Furthermore, I may suggest you keep a journal. This provides a chance to recognise your triggers. It also provides a release for your troubling thoughts.
The work can feel challenging for clients. Nevertheless, as an experienced counsellor, I am trained to listen. I will try to understand how your concerns are affecting you. This caring, therapeutic relationship promotes your self-acceptance and understanding. It helps to alleviate symptoms.
Furthermore, I have worked with a wide range of clients who have experienced troubling anxiety. Many have completed their therapy. They found that they are able to cope effectively. Read some of their stories here.
Creative working option
I am qualified in working creatively in the therapy room. This allows for us to explore how you are feeling using a different method. Clients are encouraged to use the process to connect to their emotions. This can be good for those who find it difficult to verbalise how they feel.
We can use writing, art or poetry as another way of communicating, for instance. If you’d like, we can discuss creative working in an initial session.
