How can counselling help depression?

Depression is being colourblind and constantly told how colourful the world is – Atticus

My practice, based in Snitterfield near Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa, offers face-to-face therapy, online and telephone counselling, and walk and talk therapy in the Warwickshire countryside.

I offer counselling for depression, where together, we can explore the root causes of your depressive symptoms, all at your pace.

Finding a counsellor can be a daunting task when you’re already feeling unwell. So, I want to make this process as easy as possible for you. Through our work together, I will accompany you through these dark times. So, as your therapist, I will support you to develop strategies to cope with your despair.

Man with depression

Signs of a severely depressed state

Sometimes we may notice how our low mood may be deepening. We may self-harm or turn to excessive alcohol, substances or other addictive behaviours as a way of coping. These coping mechanisms can soothe the pain of difficult feelings.

However, a cycle can start where feelings of shame and guilt can intensify our depressive state. So, in our therapy sessions, we can work together on practising other ways of coping with severe depression.

Furthermore, if you feel low for a prolonged period of time, you may find it hard to appreciate activities you used to enjoy. Hence, it can be difficult to motivate yourself therefore affecting your day-to-day living.

If you have continued low mood, you may experience suicidal thoughts which can be frightening. Together in therapy, we can explore these feelings safely and without judgement.

For those who are neurodivergent, depression can sometimes develop as a result of years of masking, feeling misunderstood or struggling to fit in. This is an area I have both personal and professional experience of.

Does counselling work for depression?

Counselling provides a space for you to speak confidentially about your difficulties without fear of judgement. Previous clients have reported how this has enabled them to start to recover.

I have an extensive level of experience working with clients who are feeling low and depressed. I have helped many people who have been suffering from distressing episodes in their lives.

Following our therapeutic work together, many clients have gone on to live more hopeful and fulfilling lives. If overcoming your despair is the top priority in your life, then please do get in touch.

FAQs including Fees

An empathic and accepting counselling approach

My therapeutic approach involves exploring your feelings and how things are for you. This builds a trusting relationship where you feel accepted and not judged. It helps you to safely explore what may be causing your symptoms.

There may be many different reasons. Some clients report things that have contributed. These could include low self-esteem, abuse, bereavement, trauma or relationship problems. Whatever the issue, we can work together to improve how you feel.

Ease your depression

At times, this work can feel daunting. So, as an experienced therapist, I will listen and emotionally hold you. This allows you the room to develop self-understanding. As a result, this can help to ease your depressive symptoms as your self-awareness builds.

Together we can manage to alleviate your symptoms. Finding your way forward.

We can work creatively

Sometimes, I work creatively which may help you to explore emotions in a different way. So, if agreed with you, we can use art, poetry, writing or stones as a form of communication.

This method is to encourage you to use a different medium to unearth how you feel. Any creative work isn’t judged, but instead used to further understand your emotions.

Furthermore, working in this way can be especially good for people who find it hard to put their feelings into words.

For some people, walk and talk therapy in the Warwickshire countryside can also offer a gentle and grounding alternative to working indoors, particularly when depression makes it hard to be in a confined space.

Frequently Asked Questions – Depression Counselling

What is depression counselling?

Depression counselling provides a safe, confidential space to explore feelings of low mood, hopelessness and emotional exhaustion. Rather than offering quick fixes, it helps you understand what may be contributing to how you feel and gradually develop a way forward at your own pace.

How do I know if I need counselling for depression?

If low mood is affecting your daily life, relationships, work or sleep – or if you feel stuck, hopeless or unable to see a way forward – counselling may help. You don’t need to reach a crisis point before seeking support. Reaching out early is a sign of strength.

Can counselling help with severe depression?

Yes. Counselling can be helpful at many stages of depression, including more severe episodes. Where appropriate, I may suggest combining counselling with a visit to your GP, particularly if physical symptoms such as sleep difficulties or significant changes in appetite are affecting your wellbeing.

How long will depression counselling take?

This varies from person to person. Some people find a short course of sessions helpful; others benefit from longer term support. We work at your pace and review progress together as we go – there is no set number of sessions required.

Can depression be linked to neurodivergence?

Yes – depression is common among neurodivergent people, often developing through years of masking, feeling misunderstood or struggling to fit in. If you feel this may be relevant to your experience, it is something we can explore together gently and without judgement.

Is walk and talk therapy helpful for depression?

For some people, yes. Moving in nature can help lift mood, ease physical tension and make it easier to talk openly. I offer walk and talk therapy near Snitterfield at Snitterfield Bushes Nature Reserve and the Welcombe Hills – a grounding alternative to working indoors, particularly when depression makes confined spaces feel difficult.

Do you offer online counselling for depression?

Yes – I offer depression counselling online and by telephone as well as face-to-face in Snitterfield near Stratford-upon-Avon and Leamington Spa. Many people find online sessions just as effective as in-person sessions and appreciate the flexibility they offer.
